This week let’s talk about the thing that plagues millions of women, vaginal dryness. It can put a real damper on intimacy and cause physical and emotional defeat. Before we can discuss treatment plans, let’s talk about the most common causes.

1. Hormonal Changes: I know our male counterparts say we blame everything on hormones but hormones really play a big role in creating an adequately lubricated vagina. Vaginal dryness occurs most often during pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause and menopause. A lack of estrogen is the primary culprit. However, vaginal dryness can occur outside of these times due to other hormones as well. Thyroid hormone imbalances are also responsible. When in doubt, get it checked out. A visit to your primary care provider can solve and maybe remedy a hormonal imbalance.

2. Anxious women don’t have wet vaginas. Anxiety causes a decrease in blood flow to the vagina.  I’m sure minimizing your anxiety is easier said than done. Exercise is helpful. Support groups and psychotherapy are also adequate treatment options. Identifying the source of your anxiety is ideal. Don’t suffer in silence. 3. Many women often forget that medications can also influence vaginal health. Decongestants commonly found in allergy and cold medicines not only dry out your nasal passages but potentially all passages.  Asthma medicines have similar effects. If you suffer from vaginal dryness, don’t forget to tell your health care provider about any medicines you are taking. Your treatment plan may be easier than you think.

Many women see vaginal dryness as an untreatable chronic condition, something they have to just live with…forever. No mam. Vaginal dryness is not a terminal condition. Treatment plans are available. Your sex life can be amazing again.

Make an appointment with your health care provider to get your juices flowing.
